National Unemployment Dips to 9%

The Department of Labor reported that the January unemployment rate nationwide fell to 9% from 9.4% after adding only 36,000 jobs. Larger numbers were anticipated, but poor weather throughout the month held back employer hiring. The gain in December had been 121,000 jobs.

The January increases were found primarily in the manufacturing and retail industries.

Part time employment and the numbers who were unemployed dropped in January. The numbers of people who were unemployed decreased by about 600,000 during the month. The number of part timers fell from 8.9 to 8.4 million.

Overweight and Obesity

Overweight and Obesity American society has become 'obesogenic,' characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity. Policy and environmental change initiatives that make healthy choices in nutrition and physical activity available, affordable, and easy will likely prove most effective in combating obesity.

Obesity raises the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, many cancers and other diseases.

The Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) is working to reduce obesity and obesity-related conditions through state programs, technical assistance and training, leadership, surveillance and research, intervention development and evaluation, translation of practice-based evidence and research findings, and partnership development.

Check out this web site if you need help with nutrition. Proper nutrition is the key.
